Freight Class: What Sets It, and What Density Cannot Decide

Freight class is the code — one of eighteen, from 50 to 500 — that decides what an LTL carrier charges to move your shipment. Low class is cheap freight. High class is expensive freight.

Almost every explanation of it online hands you a density table and stops. We are not going to, and the reason is below: the table those pages print is the wrong shape, and the gap between it and what the classification actually says is where a reclassification bill comes from.

Four characteristics, not one

The NMFTA, which publishes the National Motor Freight Classification, describes class as resting on four transportation characteristics:

Density — “How heavy the freight is relative to the space it takes up.”

Handling — “How easy it is to move across a dock and into or out of a trailer.”

Stowability — “How effectively it can be stowed in a trailer for transport.”

Liability — “How likely the freight is to cause damage or be damaged.”

Their summary of how those combine is one sentence: “The denser and easier to move, the lower the class — and the lower the cost.”

So density decides your class only when your commodity is classified by density. Where the commodity has its own NMFC item number, that item’s class governs, and a density calculation that disagrees with it is simply the wrong answer.

That is the sentence most freight-class pages leave out, and it is the one that costs money.

The density arithmetic

Density is pounds per cubic foot, and it is exact:

  1. Volume of one piece, in cubic feet = length × width × height in inches, divided by 1,728 (the cubic inches in a cubic foot).
  2. Total volume = that, times the number of pieces.
  3. Density = total weight ÷ total volume.

A 48 × 40 × 48 inch pallet is 92,160 cubic inches, or 53.33 cubic feet. At 800 lb that is exactly 15.0 lb per cubic foot.

Two details that cause more disputes than the arithmetic does:

Measure to the widest point. Including the pallet, and including anything that overhangs it. The carrier measures what they have to fit on a trailer, not what your product is.

Weight is the whole shipment; dimensions are per piece. Getting those the wrong way round is the most common way a density comes out wrong by a factor of ten.

Why we do not print the density table

Every other page on this subject hands you an eighteen-row table mapping density to class. We published one too, on 4 September 2026, captioned as not primary-sourced. We removed it the same day, because it is not merely unverified — it is the wrong shape.

NMFTA’s Docket 2025-1 took effect on 19 July 2025. Old Dominion’s summary of it states that “A revised 13-subprovision density scale will replace the current 11-tier system, allowing for a more precise classification of freight based on density. This adjustment introduces class 50 and 55 to the NMFC density scale.”

Thirteen subprovisions. The table we had, and the one you will find on most freight blogs, has eighteen rows — that is the list of freight classes, not the density scale the classification actually uses. A further round followed: NMFTA’s Docket 2026-1 was issued 6 February 2026 with a supplement effective 23 May 2026.

The real breaks are in the NMFC, a licensed NMFTA publication we do not hold and may not reproduce. So:

  • Get the class from NMFTA’s ClassIT+ or your carrier’s rating tool, not from a blog table.
  • Re-check it after each docket. They have moved twice since 2025, and a class you looked up before May 2026 may no longer be the class.
  • Compute the density yourself — that part is arithmetic and does not expire. The density calculator does it and shows the working.

A table printed from memory is exactly the failure this site exists to avoid, and we published one for a day. It is recorded here rather than quietly deleted.

Why the reclassification bill arrives

You quote a class. The carrier picks the freight up, runs it across a dimensioner and a scale, and bills a different one. NMFTA puts it bluntly: misclassify freight and “you could face reclassification charges, delays, or damage.”

The three ordinary causes, none of them exotic:

The dimensions were the product’s, not the pallet’s. Overhang and the pallet itself both count. A 48-inch product on a 48-inch pallet is taller and wider than the spec sheet says.

The density sat on a band edge. The scale is banded, so a shipment measured two inches taller can cross a boundary and land in the next class up. An inch of shrink wrap can move the rate — which is why remeasuring beats re-reading a table.

The commodity had its own NMFC item all along. Density never governed it, and the calculation was answering a question nobody asked.

What to do with a reclassification you think is wrong

  1. Ask for the dimensioner reading and the scale ticket. Carriers capture both. If the recorded dimensions do not match what left your dock, that is the argument.
  2. Check what your bill of lading actually said. The description and the class you declared are on it, and it is the document the dispute runs through.
  3. Establish whether density governs at all. If the commodity has an NMFC item, the density argument is beside the point — and so is theirs, if they used density.

Where class fits in a quote

FAQ

Is freight class the same as NMFC code? No, and the difference matters. The NMFC item number identifies the commodity; the class is what that item resolves to. Some items assign a class outright, others say the class comes from density.

Can I just use the density table? Only if your commodity is classified by density. NMFTA lists four characteristics, and density is one of them. The table gets you an estimate and a sanity check, not an answer you can rely on for billing.

Why did my class change between quote and invoice? Almost always dimensions. The carrier measured the shipment as presented — pallet, wrap and overhang included — and the number differed from the one you quoted.

Who decides the class, me or the carrier? You declare it; the carrier verifies it and bills what they measure. The declaration is yours, the correction is theirs, and the NMFC is what both of you are arguing about.
